System Requirements

Please review the system requirements for Zimbra, your MX Record and Hosted VoIP so you are aware of what is required to take advantage of SaaS 44°'s services.

Zimbra Collaboration Suite

The basic system requirements for each user are:

  • A PC or laptop,
  • A web bowser, and
  • An Internet connection.

As with any web based application, the quality of your user experience will be a result of a combination of factors. They include the processing power (CPU) and random access memory (RAM) of your computer, the speed of your Internet connection and the way our servers are configured to serve up the application to you.

Generally speaking, if the quality of your web experience is poor, the cause is most likely an issue that you can address.

For example, we recommend that you use a current version of Firefox or Safari as your web browser for the best user experience. Firefox can be downloaded free and installed on a Windows, Mac or Linux PC or laptop. Please go to the link below, select your operating system, and follow the installation and configuration instructions.

Safari can be downloaded free and installed on a Windows PC or laptop. We suggest Mac users upgrade their current browser version as needed. Windows users should go to the link below, select your operating system, and follow the installation and configuration instructions.

If you think that your Internet connection may be the problem, please go to the link below and test your connection speed.

MX Record

In order to receive email sent to you at you(@)yourcompany.com using the SaaS 44° Zimbra Collaboration Suite, you will need to modify your MX record.

The MX record is the DNS record specifying which email server is responsible for your domain. In most cases, you will be able to do this at the Registrar that handled the process of registering your domain.

We will provide you with the SaaS 44° email server's hostname.

The changeover may take up 72 hours to be implemented as the new email server information must propagate across the Internet.

Hosted VoIP

The basic system requirements for each user are:

  • A SIP phone or a PC or laptop with a softphone and a head set, and
  • An Internet connection.

As with any web based application, the quality of your user experience will be a result of a combination of factors. The most important factor with respect to voice quality, when using a hosted VoIP service, is the speed and quality of your Internet connection. Generally speaking, if voice quality is poor, the cause is most likely an issue that you can address.

In order to determine if your your Internet connection will be able to deliver the voice quality you need, please go to the link below and test your Internet connection for VoIP quality.

In normal circumstances, most entry level cable or DSL HS Internet services available in Canada are adequate to process 3 simultaneous calls (3 calls in, 3 calls out or any combination which totals 3 calls) using SaaS 44° hosted VoIP, without compromising voice quality.

However, voice quality must be assessed in the context of the other traffic using your Internet connection. For example, you may have crucial web applications running which your employees rely on to perform their work or your business may require significant bandwidth resources. The downloading or sending of large attachments on a regular basis uses a substantial amount of bandwidth. As your VoIP traffic is sharing the same connection with all the other activities, the connection may from time to time become overloaded. This is not a problem for your normal web traffic as your Internet connection just slows down while it processes the excess data. The problem is that your Internet connection does not distinguish between regular traffic and VoIP traffic. If VoIP traffic slows down, voice quality suffers and calls may be dropped.

Fortunately, there are many ways to solve this problem. We have routers and switches that will manage Quality of Service (QoS) by giving priority to VoIP traffic, you can upgrade your Internet connection to a higher speed or purchase an additional cable or DSL connection which will be dedicated to your VoIP traffic.

If you have any questions or concerns about adding hosted VoIP IP services to your existing Internet connection, please contact us and request a VoIP assessment. There may be a fee for the VoIP assessment.

If you are going to use a SaaS 44° hosted VoIP as your primary telecommunication system, we strongly recommend:

  • A dedicated broadband connection just for hosted VoIP,
  • A segmented LAN (separate network for SIP phones and computers), and
  • Quality of Service (QoS) on every part of your LAN and WAN.
